Ministry of Education & Higher Education, Lebanon

Education in Lebanon is administered by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) which regulates all education institutes in the public sector through a regional education system. Private schools have their own organization in lebanon, but are still – yet indirectly – subject to the authority of the MEHE.

What was done: A presentation demonstrated to the minister with a hi-fi interactive prototype for an online education management system and an e-learning platform

The Education Scene in Lebanon

Lebanon is well known for its famous and good standard universities and schools in the Middle East, and although the education system in Lebanon is centralized, but this regulation is not direct.

The Lebanese state was never able to build a public education system able to compete with the private schools supported by the sects, indeed short term political interests have shown to prevail over the concern of the future state.

In April 2015, the Minister of Education Elias Bou Saab acknowledged these myriad challenges and gaps existing in the Lebanese education system. While at that time, the national curriculum has not been updated since 2000 and the national exams were not marked in 2014.

Our Approach

In September 2015, Shady Assaad, CEO @ Johnson Luke, wanted to contribute to education in Lebanon through the concept of digitizing educational knowledge and creating an online system for education management with an E-learning platform.

The concept was proposed to the Minister of Education in Lebanon Elias Bou Saab in October 2015 with a 10-year plan for project completion.

Scope

Project took 2 weeks of work by me and Shady Assaad; we worked hand-in-hand through conceptualizing and building a presentation demonstrated to the Lebanese minister.

My Job

My job was to transform this wide concept into tasks and products; after many hours of discussion and brainstorming, I built the architecture of the platforms; classified the information, defined and created the different pages, sections and modules through rapid wire-framing. Then I designed the user interface and created high fidelity interactive prototype.

Modular Architecture

The content is distributed among pages and sub-divided into modules that are reusable components having discrete units of functionality.

The modular design enforces consistency and coherency in content distribution which promotes a seamless experience and provides each of the users with a knowledge base and guided tools and instruments, as well as a unique profile offering useful contextual information.

Whether a student, parent, school or a teacher, and whether the intended website visit is to explore schools database, apply to a service, submit a complaint, contact the ministry or login to their profiles, the menu logic is designed to give the user the ability to take the first step very smoothly without having to think twice.

2. The Footer

Such a large website holding substantial amounts of information for a various and wide range of audience, demands a footer that plays an important role in its navigation, being superlative and absolute yet simple and well organized.

3. The Sidebar

For the purpose of maintaining easier accessibility and providing contextual help, the sidebar is obtainable on almost all pages of the site.

Sidebar content varies across different pages offering information (on announcements, activities, holidays, etc.) and quick-links that are suitable for each page and each type of user.

Data Modules

1. Cards

User profiles are introduced in cards across the various pages of the site. There are three types of cards for each of the types of users: students, teachers and schools. Each card presents specific information unique to each user (discussed below for each page/user).

2. Line Charts

Line charts are presented within the different profile pages for the different users: students, parents, teachers and schools. Charts in different pages of the site present unique data specific to each user (discussed below for each page/user).

Website Pages

Website pages where designed and demonstrated in our presentation including search for a school, apply to a service and submit a complaint. This section only layouts the 3 most important pages of the site: The ‘Home page‘, the ‘E-learning page‘ the ‘Profile pages‘.

Profile pages are different for each of the three users: The student/parent, the teacher and the school.

The Home Page

The first page the user sees when landing on the website. It caters for all types of users and easily directs them to the desired pieces of information whether they are looking to apply to a service, search for a school, login to their profile, etc.

1. Leading Section

The first section Immediately hands over the important announcements and the latest news.It also guides visitors further into the website through quick links.

2. Subscription Section

This section provides the users the ability to subscribe as a student, parent, or educator tokeep them posted on the latest publications, news and announcements.

3. Guidance Section

If a user cannot immediately find the needed information, this section lists the most common links used by each of the types of visitors.

4. Experts Advice

Presenting latest blog articles intended to help individuals of all ages develop the habits of inquiry and skills of expression neededto be critical thinkers, effective communicators and active citizens in today’s world. .

The E-Learning Platform

‘I know better, I do better’

General content is available for the public on the e-learning page before the user login, providing knowledge to individuals of diverse archetypes and all ages in order to develop a cultivated society.

Integrated system

The E-learning platform is integrated within the whole system; modules presenting exclusive videos, courses and programs are used within the profile pages unique for each user.

The e-learning page presents adaptive content, in which it delivers different type of content for different users, depending on whether the user is a student or a teacher, and also based on other variables:

The Parent / Student | The Teacher | The School

The Parent/Student Profile

Presented here is the parent’s profile which is similar to that of the students, except that they have the ability to access all their kids’ profiles through an extra tabbed section ‘students’ on top of the sidebar.

1. Students

This section lists kids who are currently getting schooled. Parents can switch between profiles to check on the progress of all their kids.

2. Status

The status section gives the current overall score of a student and a message of consideration.

3. Line Chart

The chart allows students and parents to view the progress across the entire curricular year, giving them the ability to compare scores between different terms and view term details presenting scores for each subject.

It also provides two sets of data, giving the ability to compare between the term’s overall score and a specific subject of choice.

4. Recommended Guides

This section recommends online guides from the e-learning platform for parents and students. The selection of presented guides differ among different users predicted relative to scores and preferences.

5. Certifications

This section recommends new certifications to students depending on scores and presents previously acquired certifications.

The Teacher Profile

Teachers login to their profile to check on their career progress as well as the progress of students in classes they are currently teaching.

1. Classes

This section lists the classes who are currently being given by the teacher schooled. Teachers can switch between classes to check on the progress of their students.

2. Status

The status section gives the current overall score of the class and a message of consideration.

3. Line Chart

The chart allows teachers to view the progress of the class across the entire curricular year, giving them the ability to compare scores between different terms and view term details with scores for each student.

4. Students

This section displays students enrolled in the class sorted from top-to-low scores.

Students Cards
For teachers to properly weigh their effort, student-cards present the current score, last term’s score and last year’s score, as well as the number of absences made by the student.

5. Certifications

This section recommends new certifications to teachers depending on their career path and presents previously acquired certifications.

The higher students score on their exams, the higher the ranking their teacher obtain.This prompts teachers to work harder to maintain a higher ranking.

The School Profile

School profiles are accessible by the public, providing general and specific information on the school’s size, accomplishments and specializations.

1. General Info

The first section lists the grade-levels a school teaches, its classification (A,B,C,D) as well as the contact information and the location on the map.

2. Specific Info

This section provides information on the school size, accomplishments, success rate and specializations.

3. Teachers

This section displays teachers working at the school sorted from top-to-low scores.

Teachers cards
Teachers cards present the ranking (platinum, gold, silver, bronze) and the grades they teach. Teachers’ rankings are relative to their achievements, years of experience, students’ scores and certificates acquired.

4. Extracurricular Activities

The extracurricular activities the school provides to its students.

5. Schools Nearby

This section lists schools around to give the user (especially parents) the ability to compare schools within a given geographic location.

Schools cards
Schools cards present the school’s classification (class A,B,C or D) and the grades they teach. A school’s classification is relative to its students’ scores, their teachers’ rankings, achievements and success rate.
